Are you already using AI in combination with your document management system? Discover how to streamline your processes by incorporating AI services.

Enterprise Content Management and AI

April 4, 2023

In the life sciences industry, the requirements for document creation, review, approval, tracking and distribution are particularly high. An enterprise content management (ECM) system can help meet these requirements and ultimately streamline all document-based processes. Recent developments in artificial intelligence are now making document management systems even smarter. This allows for the elimination of an increasing number of time-consuming manual tasks.

Inconsult has developed customized machine learning services for document categorization and data extraction, targeting the pharmaceutical and chemical industries in particular, in order to efficiently evaluate the document types encountered in these industries. The services can be easily integrated into existing enterprise document management (ECM) systems such as Documentum, Cara or Veeva. As cloud-native applications, they can be used on premise or in the customer's preferred cloud environment. Two tasks in particular can be addressed with these specialized models:

Document categorization
Identifying document categorizations is particularly useful for triggering automated processes associated with the entry of new documents. AI is able to recognize types of documents automatically, such as invoices or contracts. This eliminates the work of manual categorization for the users. In pharmaceutical companies in particular, a wide range of documents are generated throughout the value chain (regulatory, clinical, non-clinical, ...), for which Inconsult has developed models.

Extraction of document attributes
In DMS, information already present in the documents being filed often has to be manually entered again by the user. This work can be automated by natural language processing techniques. When a document is stored (check-in/upload), a corresponding AI service first recognizes the document type and then, depending on the document type, automatically recognizes patterns in text data and reads out all information relevant to the type. This not only saves time, but also leads to improvements in data quality.

Inconsult offers services in the area of design, configuration, customizing DMS of leading manufacturers and assists you to make the most efficient use of these systems using AI. Contact us, our experts Stefan Hoferer (Head of ECM) and Dr. Matthias Rüdiger (Head of AI) are at your disposal.
