AI in pharma and life sciences

March 3, 2023

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives. One sub-discipline of AI is machine learning (ML), which has a long tradition in the natural sciences. Deep learning (DL), which utilizes multilayer neural networks, is primarily responsible for the recent popularity of AI. Examples that have made it to considerable prominence beyond the technical community include ChatGPT, Dall-E, and others. Advances in autonomous driving and robotics, however, can also be attributed to the advances in Deep Learning technologies. Unsurprisingly, life sciences too increasingly leverage AI-powered approaches. From protein sequence analysis to protein structure prediction to drug candidate selection, some of the future research in this field will be conducted through digital means.

However, AI is also driving areas that receive less public attention but are no less important. In order to successfully commercialize new developments in biotechnology and medicine, and thus make them available to patients, significant efforts are being made to ensure the quality and safety of medicines. Meeting regulatory requirements, e.g., for market approval, as well as process and quality management, are therefore of particular importance to a company's success. Research, production and ongoing monitoring of drugs generate large volumes of information such as documentation, dossiers and reports, which must be maintained and kept up to date. This is where automation technologies from the field of artificial intelligence provide significant potential for increasing efficiency and data quality.

This series of articles provides insights into potential applications of AI in the pharmaceutical industry that are not exactly in the headlines, but are nonetheless of great importance:

  • Regulatory Affairs: Regulatory Intelligence & Submission Intelligence
  • Document Management: Content transformation and migration in clinical, regulatory and quality
  • Computer Systems Validation (GxP): Validation Toolchain Automation

and other topics.
